Are you a confident speaker? If so, researchers have uncovered what’s happening in your brain that gives you the “gift of gab.” Researchers from the University College London scanned the brains of 17 professional comedians, a radio personality, and a lawyer while they talked for 30 seconds about random topics without hesitation, deviation or repetition. Their results were compared against a control group of students. They discovered that the confident speakers actually had less activity in an area of the brain associated with articulating and comprehending speech than the less confident speakers did. This suggests that the more confident speakers actually had to put less effort into the basic mechanics of speech, leaving them more resources to devote to figuring out what they were going to say next.
