CitySSMAn update was given at Monday’s Council meeting regarding a proposed Veterans Commemorative Memorial for Sault Ste. Marie.  Clyde Healey spoke to Council about the positive developments that included a fundraiser at Grand Gardens North last month that raised 26 hundred dollars.  Healey also mentioned that advertising, material and other businesses have come forward with support and that one of the next steps will reaching out to other communities for that same support.  But the next milestone for the project will come next Tuesday, May 19th when a ‘significant announcement’ is expected.  Another positive development was approval from Ottawa for a coat of arms from the downtown post office on Queen Street.  Healey and his group are awaiting word on an official donation from Canada Post.  Veterans have already purchased some 100 granite markers for the monument.  Questions were asked after Healey’s presentation including where exactly the monument would be located.  The monument is penciled in for John Rowswell Park, but exactly where in the park has not yet been determined.  Questions were also asked about whether or not the monument would be cordoned off and if Canada Plaza could be used for purposes other than for military parades.  Spokesperson Clyde Healey answered that the plaza will be used for at least three parades or services, but may be used for public events as well.  Councillor Terry Sheehan added that the monument could be a learning and appreciation experience for local youth.
