CatholicBoardThe new Huron-Superior student trustees were introduced on Wednesday.  Both of the new trustees introduced themselves to the board.  Jade Austen from St. Mary’s College talked about getting involved at her schools and in the community.  Examples she mentioned included her work in Link Crew in Grade 9 and her experience in the Impact anti-bullying group, which she says made her a more committed, responsible person.  In addition to Student Council at St. Mary’s Jade is involved with three other groups, one of which is the Student SuperCouncil.  She told trustees that she cares about all students and she hopes to use the school board to its full potential.  Jacob Tatasciore from St. Basil Secondary School spoke up with enthusiasm about the coming school year and that students need a voice more than ever — with the opening of the larger St. Mary’s College in the fall.  He also mentioned his participation in the Impact anti-bullying and the ABCD anti-drug programs, as well as his experience with OSAID — Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving.  Tatasciore is aiming to reach his full potential and help every student do the same.  He hopes to accomplish that by changing the schools for the greater good during his time as a student trustee.   The pair are taking the place of Andrew Kenopic and Matthew Sparling, who were recognized on Wednesday for their work as student trustees during this school year.

St. Basil Secondary School will be closing its doors in a few weeks, but not before a performance at Wednesday’s Catholic board meeting.  Six singers with the seven member school choir performed songs from ‘Sister Act’ in the form of a medley.  The choir recently performed at a fundraiser in support of the new St. Mary’s College and at the ‘Always A Saint’ event last month.  Teacher Shana Speakman accompanied the choir on piano — she credited the girls dedication during lunch hours and once a week after school for their success.
