Local Partners Team up to Address the Dangers of Distracted Driving.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and Safe Communities are committed to working with community partners to bring valuable educational resources to our community.

Cell phone use is one the most common distractions for drivers.  Drivers who engage in text messaging on a cell phone are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash or near crash compared with non-distracted drivers. Distracted driving also includes personal grooming, eating, adjusting controls, reaching for items as well as active passengers such as pets and children.

Distracted driving is a factor in about 4 million motor vehicle crashes in North America each year.

On Saturday June 13th between 10 am and 4 pm members of the public can come and join the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and Safe Communities at the Mill Market.  You will have the chance to take a turn experiencing driving in an interactive distracted driving simulator. The simulator provides various demonstrations of types of distracted driving.  This will allow you to personally witness the impact of distracted driving in a safe environment.

Earlier this year Safe Communities and the Algoma Public Health applied for a grant on road safety to the Ministry of Transportation. The grant request was successful and funds were designated to bring educational material on distracted driving to our community.  The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service as well as Great Lakes Honda also provided funding for this event.
