The Huron Superior Catholic District School Board approved its budget at last nights meeting that manages to wipeout an accumulated deficit but does call for staff cuts.  The 2015-16 budget includes a cut of 9 elementary teachers most of them in the Sault and 8 secondary teachers all in the Sault.  Also with the amalgamation of two secondary schools into one,  there will be a cut of one principal, 3 clerical and 2 caretaker full time equivalent positions.  There will also be a reduction in special education educational assistants—–that number hasn’t been finalized but it could involve over 10 positions.  These reductions are being made to cover an over 750-thousand dollar accumulated deficit and leave the Board with a small surplus.  The Board also saw an over 700-thousand dollar reduction to its overall grant funding from the province.  Board Director John Stadnyk says that’s related to the enrolment projections…

The budget does however include an over 740-thousand dollar increase in special education funding.  Stadnyk says the changes involve an adjustment to the high needs portion of the grant which will benefit the local board as its per pupil amount was one of the lower ones in the province…

This is the 2nd year of a 4-year phase in of the changes.
