CitySSMCity Council will receive a financial request from Crime Stoppers on Monday night.  The local chapter will looking to receive about 28 thousand dollars to keep its operations going. The amount is based on a per capita share among the communities in Algoma District.  Crime Stoppers of Sault Ste. Marie and District of Algoma have been around for 30 years.  The request comes following a decision in the City of Sudbury’s budget to allow for permanent annual funding of 50 thousand dollars to support Crime Stoppers.

A rezoning issue talked about at Council earlier this year will be discussed again Monday evening.  The applicant will be requesting to remove a ‘holding provision’ to allow for the construction of a Mac’s Convenience Store and gas bar on the subject property on Second Line East at Pine Street.  Council will be asked this time to remove the provision from 849 Second Line East, subject to there being that the subject property at 849, as well as at 829 Second Line East have one common access and egress point only.  It would also be subject to an easement agreement being registered on title to facilitate the common agress/egress point.

Council will also receive a report from the Spending Review Committee on Monday.  It is being suggested that a subcommittee be struck consisting of the Interim CAO/CAO, the Finance Commissioner and the Audits and Capital Planning Manager.  The group will work to identify the best ways where a Council-led spending review could happen and report back to Council with recommendations.  The review would involve money related to city operations and grants to outside agencies. The establishment of such a group would be timely as council prepares the 2016 City Budget and assess it with a more thorough perspective.  This would allow Council to have more oversight on this matter.

Monday’s City Council meeting will also highlight the winner of the 2015 Community Development Award.  This year’s recipient is Savoy’s Jewellers on Queen Street East.  The honour is rewarded to recognize significant achievement in community development, highlight successful development ideas for others to use and inspire similar projects.  A request to accept proposals for a new Municipal Flag for Sault Ste. Marie will also be discussed.   A committee would also be put together to review those ideas and make a recommendation to Council regarding any new Municipal Flag.
