SaultMIA recommendation to approve uses permitted in a General Business District within I-1 and I-2 Industrial district zones is back on the City Commission agenda on Monday.  A Second Reading of an ordinance to allow uses permitted in the B-3 Zoning District to locate in those industrial zones is scheduled, along with approving the ordinance as presented.  The change would allow for new, previously unpermitted uses in those areas and permit existing uses in those areas that are presently non-conforming.  One example is in the industrial area of the island, the former Soo Motors and Storey Automotive sites do not conform to the I-1 district.  Lock City, however, could sell someone 2x4s, but could not sell the hammer and nails because they are in the retail category.

The City Commission agenda also includes authorization of a memo of understanding with Lake State for an outdoor ice rink area.  The MOU highlights that Lake State shall provide the land and the city would provide the water for filling the rink and resurfacing.  LSSU would also be responsible for materials to establish the rink and its disassembley at the end of the skating season.  Another issue is the potential awarding of a construction contract for the Urgent Needs watermain repair and replacement project.  The project consists of watermain and other utility replacements on Riverside Drive, Ridge Street, Sova Street and Gros Cap Avenue with associated restoration.  A special meeting on the issue could occur late this week or next week if bids are higher than expected.
