Apples don’t just keep away doctors, they may actually help fight one aspect of aging. Researchers have discovered that a chemical found in the skin of apples can help reverse the aging of muscles. Experts say that a protein called ATF4 starves the muscles of necessary proteins as we age, leading to loss of mass and strength, but that two natural compounds can reduce ATF4 activity. One of those compounds is ursolic acid, which is found in the apple peel. Initial tests in older mice show that ursolic acide and tomatidine (found in green tomatoes) “dramatically reduced age-related muscle weakness and atrophy,” increased muscle mass by ten percent, and muscle quality by 30 percent after just two months.
