Supplied by the Algoma District School Board… Algoma District School Board (ADSB) Chair Jennifer Sarlo along with Director of Education Lucia Reece and Superintendent Joe Maurice accepted a generous donation from United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2251 at the September 15th Committee of the Whole meeting.

Mike Da Prat, President of USW Local 2251, donated $10,000 to the ADSB Breakfast Program to support schools locally and throughout the district.

Superintendent Maurice said that when this news was shared with principals at a recent summer professional development day in August, there was spontaneous applause and a heartfelt “thank you” from all present.

This amount of money will go a long way to support the purchase of fresh fruit, milk, yoghurt, cereals and other healthy options, much needed by some students who arrive at school without breakfast or lunch for the day.

Studies have shown that children whose nutritional needs are met have fewer attendance and discipline problems, and their ability to learn is enhanced.

ADSB Chair Jennifer Sarlo thanked Mike and the USW on behalf of the Board. “The issue of poverty is very real in our community and I get a firsthand view of it on a regular basis in my volunteer work at St. Vincent Place. Our staff experience its impact on our most vulnerable students on a daily basis. This donation from the USW Local 2251 will have a positive impact on a very present need in our schools. We wish to thank them very much for their generous donation.”
