The Ontario College of Physician and Surgeons has scheduled a disciplinary hearing in April for a Sault Ste. Marie family doctor.  The hearing is scheduled from April 25th to the 29th.  The professional misconduct allegations against Dr. Douglas Brooks include inappropriately accessing and without consent, the health records of two patients on a number of occasions between the years 2003 and 2006 for one patient and 2003 to 2014 for a second patient.  It is also alleged that he acted as the Coroner in all or part of the investigation into a patient’s death despite a real or perceived conflict of interest due to a close personal relationship. Meantime the Sault Area Hospital has issued a statement saying its own investigation involving the hospital’s Chief Privacy Officer found that a breach did occur.  The brief statement goes on to say that the hospital cooperated fully with the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario and in accordance with hospital policy informed the family involved.
