If your Halloween costume requires you to use a lot of makeup on your face, you’ll want to exercise caution. Sometimes the ingredients in the makeup can be the scariest thing about the holiday. New York City dermatologist Dr. Sejal Shah says that makeup contains a number of base ingredients such as fillers, fragrances, binders, emollients and preservatives, and that in cheap Halloween makeup those ingredients are usually of lower quality and therefore likely to cause skin problems. He explains the heavy texture of Halloween makeup makes it more likely to cause acne, and that red dye is known for causing reactions as is the ingredient PPD which is found in black and dark colored cosmetics and dyes. Shah adds, “The scariest and most concerning substances found in Halloween makeup are heavy metals, which can be toxic…and although lead poisoning doesn’t commonly occur via the skin, it can be absorbed through the skin.” To stay safe, do a patch test on your inner arm every time you use a new product a few days before putting it on your face.”
