The head of the union representing city firefighters is hoping city council will put the brakes on the fire chief’s recommendation to make cuts to the fire department when it meets Monday night.  Sault Ste. Marie Firefighters Association President Marty Kenopic says the union was informed Monday morning that Fire Chief Mike Figliola wants to reduce the fire department by 25% or up to 20 positions over a three year period.  Kenopic a firefighter in the Sault for the past 22-years, says a cut of one position would be too much…

A motion will be brought forward at Monday’s meeting calling on city council to accept the chief’s recommendation to move forward…

The cuts would be made by way of attrition or by not replacing retiring firefighters…

Kenopic says the union executive found out about the recommendation at a meeting involving the fire chief along with the city CAO and the city’s commissioner of human resources.
