Algoma District School Board Chair Jennifer Sarlo and Director of Education Lucia Reece answer questions after Tuesday’s board meeting.

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario plans to ramp up their work to rule campaign on Wednesday. This despite both the union and the province returning to the bargaining table. When asked what the Algoma District School Board was going to do in the event of any further disruption — such as bring in parent volunteers for extracurricular activities — board chair Jennifer Sarlo would only say that they are prepared…

Sarlo was also asked about a suggestion from the province that school boards dock teachers’ pay starting November 1st for engaging in work to rule campaigns. She answered that the board is not entirely clear on what that mandate is and they wonder if this will be a local or provincial initiative. A step up in the ETFO work to rule campaign would result in all extra-curricular activities — that’s those activities that would happen after school hours — being cancelled. Some schools in the province are experiencing garbage that is piling up in the hallways. Algoma District School Board Director of Education Lucia Reece was asked about any effects from the work to rule on student learning to date…

Reece was positive when asked about a tentative three year agreement reached with occasional secondary school teachers at the public board earlier this week…

The local agreement with the occasional teachers follows a central agreement at the provincial table that was ratified more than a month ago. Details of the agreement will not be announced until both sides ratify the three year deal next month.
