(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – March 1, 2016): Students studying at Algoma University can now benefit from a new on-campus Student Health Services department, which includes access to a physician, counsellor, and dental hygienist.
“It is important that we offer students access to healthcare providers,” said Tom Mauro, Director of Ancillary and Student Services at Algoma University. “Having a new Student Health Services department on campus is an important piece of our student wellness plan. We are excited that Algoma U can facilitate the delivery of services which will contribute to students’ wellbeing as well as their academic success.”
Effective immediately, Dr. Karen Booth will have a weekly Wednesday clinic where non-emergency care will be provided to students. Booth attended the University of Toronto for Medical School, completed her Family Medicine Residency Training at The University of Ottawa, and Emergency Medicine Training at Northern Ontario School of Medicine (formerly called Northeastern Ontario Medical Education Corporation). Booth offers a blended practice of Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, and Palliative Care in Sault Ste. Marie. She is a physician at the Sault Area Hospital and works in the Emergency Department.
Kerri Dool has been employed as the onsite counsellor at Algoma University for the past four years and provides counselling services on most weekdays after 5:00pm and on select weekends. She completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Queen’s University, a post-graduate diploma in Psychology from the University of Melbourne as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar, and her Master’s in Social Work from Grand Valley State University. Dool maintains active registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and also serves as the Mental Health Leader for the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board. She applies a very holistic approach to her counselling services, consulting with doctors and other wellness personnel to address all aspects of student health.
Dental hygienist Kim Langevin will also be offering dental hygiene services for students. She will hold hours on Mondays. Langevin graduated from Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ontario in 1995 and received the Golden Scaler Award. She is currently studying Business Administration part-time at Algoma U. She recently opened an Independent Dental Hygiene practice at 370 Lake Street and specializes in the fearful client. Langevin will be performing dental assessments, oral cancer screening, dental scaling, dental polishing, fluoride application, and referrals to many local dentists for students.
