Marriage is for life, right? The Daily Mail reports that up to five percent of marriages in the UK end with one person simply walking away from the relationship without warning…

It’s being referred to as “spousal abandonment syndrome.” Sources suggest that the internet and ease of sending text messages means couples no longer talk much face to face and therefore it’s much easier for a member of the couple to simply walk away. Lyn Ayrton, managing director of the family law firm Lake Legal, explains, “The ability to become emotionally removed from a situation and just leave suddenly becomes that much easier. It often seems that the ‘abandoning’ spouse has bottled up their feelings over the years and has dedicated significant amounts of time to planning an exit. The unsuspecting spouse feels robbed of the opportunity to save the marriage.” Similar behavior, often referred to as “ghosting,” happens often in North America among people who are dating.
