(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – August 4, 2016): Competing in their first year in the Ontario Western Region Youth Soccer League for the 2016 soccer season, Sault Civics SHOCK U16 Girls are sitting in first place to date.  Entering as an underdog team and initially rated 2nd last, they have shown that they can compete with some of the top teams of southwestern Ontario.  After a 1-2 record in the May kick-off tournament held in Windsor, the team has rebounded with a very successful record in league play. With 4 games left in their season, they have logged 8 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie in the league.
Eight other teams competing in the Ontario Western Region Youth Soccer League include Sarnia Spirit, Orangeville Storm, Guelph Royals Blue, Kitchener Spirit, Waterloo United, Windsor Eastside Kickers VP, Windsor Eastside Kickers WH, and the St. Thomas Scorpions.
“We knew the team had the technical skills and the drive to compete at this level of play”, says Coach Daniel Scarpino. “It hasn’t been easy to get where we are in the standings but whatever the outcome; the increased level of competition has helped our team refine their game skills. It has been a very positive experience for the team all the way around and has boosted their confidence on the field.”
Some standout statistics for the team include goalie Emma Hendrie with a league leading 5 shutouts and Makenzie Chartrand and Taryn Gazankas with 8 and 4 goals respectively. Other team players include: Tiffany Davies, Sabrina Duckstein, Kara Gruyters, Jessica Howe, Julia Howe, Jenna Nanne, Olivia Orazietti, Jadyn Pettenuzzo, Sydney Pigeon, Destinee Pine, Nicole Pulente, Karlee Richer, Laura Rosso, Emily Scarpino and Emily Weir. Coaching staff for the team is comprised of Coach Daniel Scarpino, assistant coaches Nick Pallazzi, Drew Johnson, Brandon Syms and Team Manager, Allyson Pulente.
The next game competition for the Sault SHOCK will be in Guelph and Kitchener on the August 13th-14th weekend followed by their final two games against the Windsor Eastside Kickers WH at Tom Tipton field in the Sault on the August 20th-21st weekend.
About the Team
Sault Civics Girls 2000 is a competitive team for girls ages 16 and under. The “Civics” program is designed for players wishing to develop their skills at a more competitive level. This team has represented Sault Ste. Marie in their age division in various tournaments both in Canada and the United States. The team has played together since October of 2010.
