OPP news release…
GOULAIS –  At approximately 5:15 p.m. on August 4, 2016 Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a 911 call regarding a capsized vessel in Haviland Bay on Lake Superior.

At approximately 4 p.m. on August 4, 2016 two males headed out on Lake Superior in a 12 foot aluminum boat with a six horse power motor.

Weather conditions at the time were sunny and windy with waves from two to three feet high. The boat was approximately 250 feet from shore when it capsized.

Life jackets were in the boat but not worn.  A 23 and a 25-year-old male swam towards the shoreline.

The 23-year-old male made it safely to shore. The 25-year-old local man disappeared from sight in the water.

The Sault Ste. Marie OPP Marine Unit, OPP Aviation Services,  the Joint Recovery Co-Ordination  Centre (JRCC) Trenton (Hercules), the Auxiliary Coast Guard Unit, Goulais River Fire and Rescue, and Sault Search and Rescue all attended  the scene assisting in the ground and air search.

At present, the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Marine Unit, OPP Highway Safety Division, OPP Aviation Services and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) Marine Unit are on scene continuing the search.

The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) has also been deployed. The search is continuing.
