The City of Sault Ste. Marie will be adding its voice to the opposition from Great Lakes communities on both sides of the border opposing a decision that will allow the first ever exception in diverting water away from the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River basin.  City Council on Monday approved a resolution brought forward by councillors Steve Butland and Sandra Hollingsworth calling on our City to protest to the International Joint Commission a decision by 8 State Governors that would allow the diversion of up to 8.2 million gallons of water per day from Lake Michigan by the city of Waukesha, Wisconsin.  Butland says it sets a dangerous precedent…

 

Butland says climate change is developing over years while the water crisis is here and now.  He says its important to join the more than 100 local governments on both sides of the border in looking  to fight the decision…

 

Great Lakes community mayors from both sides of the border want a hearing to challenge the recent decision.
