Steelworkers Local 2251 representing around 21-hundred hourly workers at Essar Steel Algoma will not be taking part in mediated sessions with court appointed mediator Justice Warren Winkler while Steelworker Local 2724 will.
Both union locals are expected to exchange monetary proposals this week with Essar Steel Algoma ahead of what the company has termed last negotiations dates on March 7th, 8th and 9th.
Local 2724 represents close to 500 salaried workers and its president Lisa Dale says they are facing similar monetary concessionary demands from the company that Local 2-51 is facing…

Meantime a strike vote is being held today by Local 22-51 at the Marconi Hall from 5am until 8:30 pm.
Representatives from Hamilton Steelworker Local 1005 came up to the Sault yesterday to show support for members of Local 22-51 ahead of today’s strike vote.
Local 2251 wanted written assurances from either Justice Winkler or Judge Newbould that such sessions would be held under the CCAA process—-Local 2251 President Mike Da Prat says they prefer that process and had been negotiating with bidders for the steel plant under the CCAA prior to receiving notification from Essar Steel Algoma to bargain under the Labour Relations Act…

 

Those terms include a 10% cut in pay and a reduction in vacation time among other items.
