Elliot Lake – Elliot Lake is mourning the loss of long-time resident, veteran and community activist, Bob Manuel, according to Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP, Carol Hughes.
Hughes is joining many others from the area to express their gratitude and condolences after Mr. Manuel passed late last week. Robert Manuel was a veteran of the Korean War who called Elliot Lake home for over 60 years, but he is best known for the work he did to have Vimy Ridge Day acknowledged as a national heritage day in Canada.
“Just last Sunday (April 9th) he was Master of Ceremonies as we marked the100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge,” said Hughes. “It’s nice that people all across Canada will keep a part of his legacy alive every time they celebrate Vimy Ridge, since he worked so hard for that.”
Hughes knows people in Elliot Lake will remember Manuel for all manner of contributions to the community which he dedicated himself to.
“Bob Manuel contributed so much to the community and his fingerprints are all over Elliot Lake,” said Hughes.  ‘Whether with the Legion, the Chamber of Commerce, the Terry Fox Foundation, the Korean Veterans Association, the Navy League and more, Bob gave his all for his community.  He was even a founder of Winter Fest and the annual Legion New Year’s Levee!”
Hughes said she had many opportunities to work with Mr. Manuel for the past twenty years.
“I think Mr. Manuel was a really special person who was so committed to his community and others in a way you don’t see as much these days,” said Hughes.  “I know a lot of people are joining me in expressing condolences to his family and friends.”
