The 3rd and final day at the VEX IQ World Championships would give the Martel brothers from Missanabie their busiest competition schedule, with two more Skills matches, and six Teamwork matches.

The Skills challenges proved to be frustrating, as successes in practice did not translate to best scores when it counted, and they were unable to improve on yesterday’s best efforts.  Seasonal highs of 65 points gained them their invitation to get to this World Championships, so they knew there were better scores possible. They posted a final score of 45 points, and finished 204th overall in the field of 264 teams at this event.

Teamwork qualifying matches showed steady improvements, while Team Missanabie was able to help their alliance partners to post several matches in the mid-60’s with some very exciting final second balancing on the bonus bridge. Their final match posted their best score with 68 points.  Other matches had challenges trying to coordinate the efforts to get two robots on the ramp together, and resulted in a pair of lower 20 and 30 point results.  Overall, the team finished in 55th of the 68 teams in their qualifying division, and did not advance to the playoffs.

This caps off the most successful program ever for the Algoma District, as this season saw 62 district high schools and elementary schools compete in VEX robotics, allowing over 300 students to participate in this exciting and expanding program.  Special thanks to the Algoma District School Board, Tenaris Algoma Tubes, the Professional Engineers of Ontario, the Ontario Association of Certified Technicians and Technologists, The Rotary Club of Wawa, and Sault College for their unwavering support of this program.  Thanks as well to the 3-dozen sponsors and supporters of the recent GoFundMe campaign to assist our teams to get to the World Event.

The new VEX season begins next month, with local competitions expected in December and January.  For more information, contact robotics coordinator Jonathan Budau at budauj@adsb.on.ca.
