Do you have expired, unwanted and unused prescribed medication in your home? Expired and unused prescription medications are often left in medicine cabinets and cupboards.

The Stay on Your Feet initiative at Algoma Public Health, along with Safe Communities Partnership, Sault Rising Stars, Ontario Provincial Police, City Police Services, Batchewana Police Services and the Anishinabek Police Services are having a Prescription Drug Drop off Day on May 20, 2017.

“Older adults should take the time to review medications they are taking and remove ones that are expired or no longer needed,” says Helen Kwolek, public health nurse at Algoma Public Health. “Some medication may also increase an older adults risk for a fall. Proper medication management is a simple way to improve an older adult’s chances of staying safe on their feet.”

By providing a way for people to dispose of prescription medication that is no longer need, we are also protecting you and your family from prescription drugs that can be hazardous.

There are three ways to dispose of your medications:

1.            Bring your unused medication to Station Mall on Saturday May 20, 2017 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. We will have volunteers who can dispose of them properly.
2.            If you can’t get out on Saturday, May 20, 2017, call 705-946-9818 and an OPP officer will pick up your prescriptions.
3.            Bring your prescriptions to a local pharmacy.

In addition to reviewing and cleaning out medication, older adults can also:

1.            Review medications with your pharmacist.
2.            Know the side effects of your medication.
3.            Tell your doctor if your medication makes you dizzy or lightheaded.
4.            Never take someone else’s medication.
