Sault Ste. Marie will be playing host to up to one thousand visitors for a pair of chess competitions.
Beginning today through until Monday, the 2017 Canadian Youth Chess Championships will be held here as competitors will compete for the title of national champion and the right to represent Canada at the World Youth Chess Championship later this year.
Then over a 9-day period beginning Saturday, the Sault will play host to the Canadian Open Chess Championship which will draw an elite international field of players including a 15-year old from Delhi, India who is currently one of the youngest chess Grandmasters in the world.
Both events over the next eleven days will take place at Sault College and the tournaments are expected to generate 5-thousand visitor days and up to 1 million dollars in direct visitor spending for the local economy.
