(Sault Ste. Marie, ON)- Sault MP Terry Sheehan congratulates Asima Vezina on being appointed the new President and Vice-Chancellor of Algoma University. Her strong background in education made her the unanimous top choice of the Presidential Search Committee.
“Having strong leadership in education is critical to Sault Ste. Marie’s ability to prepare for the future, and to work our way into the knowledge based economy. The Government of Canada has invested generously in the Sault’s education infrastructure,” MP Sheehan said. “I look forward to working with Asima in her new role as we continue to develop the Sault’s education sector,” he said.
MP Sheehan’s extensive involvement in education over the years, reflects his recognition of education as an essential part of our personal and work lives.
The Government of Canada also values education highly. Within the past year, MP Sheehan has been pleased to announce federal funding for Algoma University and Sault College.
Algoma University received $2.45 million to upgrade Shingwauk Hall; $165, 314 to fund a permanent exhibit exploring Algoma’s history as a residential school for indigenous students; and $10.2 million for the Shingwauk Education Trust’s Anishinabek Discovery Centre to preserve, promote and share First Nations history.
Sault College received $5 million to establish the Institute for Environment Education and Entrepreneurship (iE3) at Sault College.
