(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) Thursday October 19, 2017 – Member of Parliament, Terry Sheehan, moved a Notice of Motion at the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology meeting today on the two year anniversary of the 2015 election:

“That the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology study
the Canadian steel industry and make recommendations to the government
for the implementation of a Strategy for the Canadian steel industry.”
MP Terry Sheehan

Since being elected two years ago MP Sheehan has been a strong advocate for the steel industry in Sault Ste. Marie and the nation.

Mr. Sheehan was elected to co-chair the All-Party Steel Caucus which allows Members of Parliament from across the country to work collaboratively on issues facing the steel industry and to strongly advocate for investments and support for this critical industry.

“When I was elected I was asked by the steel industry to elevate the discussion around steel.
I have undertaken this role with great tenacity.” said Sheehan

Mr. Sheehan played a major role in helping modernize trade legislation which was part of both the 2016 and 2017 Federal Budget plans. The historic investments in Canada wide infrastructure projects by the Federal Government post-election 2015, has increased demand for steel products.
“The support our government has been demonstrating to the Canadian Steel Industry is remarkable. By proactively tackling the dumping of steel in our market, funding and improving our infrastructure for steel products and by supporting innovation, I see the direct results of these investments in my riding. I am really proud to be a part of this turnaround for the steel industry in Canada.” said Sheehan

Sheehan has also been focused on the need to have well-paid, reliable jobs in the industry.
The governments promised investments in labour skills training is a key part of ensuring this happens.

“In order to be competitive, it is critical for the steel industry to have highly skilled workers. We need to maintain connections with universities and colleges, we need to look to innovation, to ensure that the sector has the highly trained, highly skilled workforce it needs to compete and prosper internationally.”
Sheehan said.
“I introduced this Notice of Motion because I made a promise to fight for our Steel industry. I am excited to undertake this important work with the committee. Canada needs a steel strategy so we can continue to build on what we have accomplished in the past two years and to further strengthen our future.” Sheehan concluded.
