Sault Ste. Marie, ON (2017 10 24) – As residents prepare for winter, the Public Works and Engineering department would like to provide the following reminders:
Staff are currently sweeping and cleaning basins and storm drains in preparation for the flow of water during the winter months. The public is asked to manage leaves as they may cause drains to plug, resulting in potential flooding. Take caution when in close proximity to drainage systems and ensure children and pets stay away from hazardous areas. Basketball nets should also be removed from roadways to assist in street cleaning.
Additionally, under By-law 77-200-5(14), motorists are reminded that effective Wednesday, November 1 parking of vehicles on city streets is not permitted during the winter months between midnight and 6 a.m.
Vehicles that remain parked on the street during an overnight parking restriction will receive a $15 fine and may have their vehicle towed at the owner’s expense. The By-law remains in effect from November 1, 2017 through to midnight April 30, 2018 even when there is no snow. Weather predictions may be incorrect and when snow occurs officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service are kept busy tagging and towing cars to assist Public Works and Engineering Services with snow removal.
The City of Sault Ste. Marie thanks residents for their cooperation in helping to keep our streets safe and clear this winter. For more information, contact Public Works and Engineering Services at 705.759.5201 or email pwt@cityssm.on.ca.
