A report to city council for Monday’s budget meeting indicates that there would be no savings if the City was to move from a weekly to a bi-weekly schedule for both garbage and recycling collection.
A report from the City’s Director of Public Works Susan Hamilton Beach explains that the estimate is based on the assumption that the same volume of waste would be generated at each household and staff would be at each stop for a longer period of time and the equipment would be handling twice as much waste during pickup.
She further explains there wouldn’t be any savings for recycling collection as our City’s recycling contract is based on a per ton rate.
Studies have also shown that bi-weekly collection of recyclables reduces the volume collected which may have future implications to the City when seeking future approvals for our landfill expansion.
The report is presented to council as an information item.
