The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) became aware of high waters in the Chippewa River area last week when contacted by a local landowner.

On December 18, MNRF visited the Chippewa River area after receiving additional calls regarding water levels. During the site visit MNRF staff observed several properties and some buildings surrounded by water. A large number of the properties in this area are seasonal. Road access in and out of the area has not been affected by flooding. There is no mandatory evacuation order in place.
At this time, MNRF cannot confirm what is causing the flooding. It’s possible there has been an ice jam on the river. Ministry staff will continue to monitor the situation daily.

MNRF has not issued a flood advisory or warning in Sault Ste. Marie District. Other river systems in the Sault Ste. Marie District are on the decline in terms of water levels. This appears to be an isolated situation. Cold weather is in the forecast which should further lower water levels. MNRF will continue to monitor the levels and stay in communication with Batchewana Fire and Rescue, Goulais Fire and Rescue and OPP.
