Sault Ste. Marie, ON (2018 03 07) – A $10,000 donation from the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council will support Sault Ste. Marie’s first splash pad in Bellevue Park. The splash pad committee was presented with the donation at the annual Mayor’s Youth Gala.
“The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council provides a voice for the youth of Sault Ste. Marie,” said Camille Irwin, Council Chair. “The splash pad will provide hours of children’s play in a free inclusive way for families to enjoy active outdoor summer fun. The splash pad will have a significant impact on the youth of our community.”
In consultation with the community, the Parks and Recreation Master Plan as well as the youth friendly designation application determined the need for a splash pad in Sault Ste. Marie. Splash pads are a colourful way to enhance the City’s parks. They include engaging water features such as shower heads and spray jets with various activated, in- ground and above ground features that spray water in different patterns and directions cooling visitors off on hot summer days.
“We are grateful to the MYAC for recognizing the importance of the Splash Pad in our community,” said Councillor Paul Christian, Chair of the Sault Ste. Marie Splash Pad Committee. “Donations like this will create possibilities for advancing the opportunities for the youth and create a fun space for families to enjoy.”
In addition to its philanthropic work, the MYAC has plans to continue hosting a variety of youth events throughout the year, such as smaller coffee house style events featuring youth musical talent. “It’s our dream at the MYAC to keep doing more events, and bring the city together to celebrate the youth in our community,” Irwin concluded.
The City’s splash pad committee is grateful to all its donors for continuing to see good things for our community. To learn more visit saultstemarie.ca/splashpad.
