Algoma’s Chief Executive Officer Kalyan Ghosh says Algoma is rapidly approaching near self-sufficiency in power generation following its latest acquisition.
The local steelmaker announced yesterday that it has augmented its power generating capacity with its acquisition of a neighbouring co-generation plant.
The 55 megawatt combined heat and power plant formerly known as the Lake Superior Power Plant had been owned by Brookfield Renewable Power—-it was shutdown in the fall of 2014.
The power plant has the capacity to increase output to 110 megawatts with the addition of a second gas turbine.
A statement from the company, says the facility will operate intermittently, supplementing Algoma’s current power requirements.
