Sault Ste. Marie: The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) is pleased to announce
several changes in Principal and Vice-Principal placements for the 2018-19 school year.
St. Mary’s College (SMC) Principal Cindy Sawyer has announced her intention to retire as of June 30,
2018. Colleen Hannah will move from her current position as Principal of St. Francis French Immersion to
become the Principal of St. Mary’s College.
“We thank Cindy for her many years of service and tremendous contribution to Catholic education. We
pray that her retirement is as fulfilling as her career was,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, Rose
Burton Spohn.
Sawyer began her teaching career in 1987 at St. Mary’s College and then moved to the former St. Basil
Secondary School. In the fall of 1998, she became Vice-Principal of SMC, and took over as Principal
there in 2001. In 2011, she became Principal at St. Basil Secondary and then was named Principal of the
new St. Mary’s College in 2015.
“As we say farewell to Cindy, I take this time to welcome Colleen to her new role. I am confident Colleen’s
creativity, strong interpersonal skills, and leadership qualities will continue to help St. Mary’s College
students and staff thrive,” added Burton Spohn.
The new Principal at St. Francis French Immersion will be Carmela Roznik. St. Mary’s French Immersion
will also have a new Principal, as Donna Carricato assumes the role of Administrative Designate.
Christine Durocher, currently at Holy Family, will take over as Principal at St. Mary’s French Immersion.
Paul Best will become the new Principal of Holy Family. Best has served as Principal of St. Basil in White
River for the past three years.
All of the appointments will take effect on September 1, 2018.
Vacancies in the Vice-Principal position at St. Mary’s French Immersion and Principal at St. Basil in White
River will be filled at a later date.
