More people are working in the Sault according to the latest report from Stats Canada as the unemployment rate has dropped to 5.1% last month compared to the year ago rate of 6.4%.
Despite an aging population, the participation rate for Sault Ste. Marie which measures both the number of employed and those unemployed but actively looking for work has come in at 65%.
That’s a figure the Sault hasn’t seen in quite a while and is up from what we have seen for most of this year where the rate has been in the low to mid 50’s.
Last month also marked the first time this year that the number of employed has climbed above 40-thousand—coming in at 41-thousand-300.
The employment rate came in at 62%.
