Start your engines! Sault Ste. Marie is hosting a major international snowmobile race this winter. The Rivercity Motorsports 250 is taking place March 1 and 2 at Runway Park on Airport Road. It will be a final points competition for the Midwest International Racing Association (MIRA) and is expected to be the circuit’s biggest race of the season.

“I am very excited and proud that MIRA chose Sault, Ontario for a major points race,” said lead event organizer Brandon Lemieux. “I have been working with a group of dedicated people to help bring this ice oval snowmobile race to town, and every indication is that it’s going to be a huge event. Spectators will be amazed at what these racers are capable of – the speed and competition is similar to NASCAR. I thank our main sponsors, Rivercity Motorsports and GFL Environmental, for making this event possible.”

The Rivercity Motorsports 250 will feature 32 pro-enduro race teams from across Canada and the United States – many of the same names that compete at the I-500 in Sault, Michigan – along with more than 60 other teams that will contend in the sportsmen 600, modified 600 and kids 120 classes. A number of local racers will also compete, including #150 Team Rivercity Motorsports, #01 Team Naithen Joseph Racing, #54 McCaig Racing and #38 Superior North Racing.

The cost to attend the Rivercity Motorsports 250 is $15 for adults and free for children 12 and under. Along with edge-of-your-seat racing, the event will also feature a warm-up tent, bum slides, food and beer. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/events/462115420862258.

On the evening of Friday, March 1, MIRA will be offering a free skate night under the lights of the half-mile ice oval. There will be a beer garden, live music and a preview of the fun to come as the teams set up on pit lane just like NASCAR. The following day will be packed with the fastest sleds on ice – all competing for the checkered flag. The final race will be the 250-lap pro-enduro with some local teams battling against the best of the best from across North America.

“It’s great to see oval racing coming back to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario,” said Gerald Buchanan, Operations Manager for the Rivercity Motorsports 250. “We encourage people and local businesses to support the event. Come out and enjoy a great weekend of high-speeds, high-octane, and fun and excitement for the whole family.”

The Rivercity Motorsports 250 is expected to draw more than 500 visiting racers and crew members, along with out-of-town spectators. Given the visitor-spending benefits for the community, Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, a division of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, is assisting race organizers with planning and delivering the event.
