Steelworkers Local 9548 President Cody Alexander representing the workers at Tenaris Algoma Tubes says they have been contacted by Sault MP Terry Sheehan and will be working with the company and Service Canada to get their Adjustment Committee started which helps provide assistance to laid off workers.
The company announced on Thursday it would be shutting down the entire mill over a three week period which will carry over the Christmas holidays and that a further 90 workers would be temporarily laid off with no recall date.
This scheduled shut down covers a period from December 15th to January 7th with the exception of a small handful of senior maintenance workers.
The union says after January 7th, this will leave the mill with around 300-to-320 workers from the 450 they had in early 2018.
