Canada Post employees here in Sault Ste. Marie will be working an extra day this week in an effort
to help Stamp Out Hunger in the community.
Employees, along with friends and family, will once again be in all neighborhoods picking up food
donations to help those less fortunate in our community this Saturday May 11.
“We will be working on a day off but when it comes to something like this, it is important to do
what we can to help”, says Mike Murphy who is a local letter carrier and organizer of the food
drive. “We are out in the community, in the neighborhoods and we see the need all around. We are
so happy to help out those who need it the most”.
Last year 27,000 pounds of food donations were received and distributed to local food banks,
pantries soup kitchens and shelters. We couldn’t believe our eyes with the amount of food collected
last year, it was truly overwhelming, said Murphy.
As we come together to help feed the hungry, we encourage our customers across the city and
area to support this vital one-day food drive. Working together, we will continue making a difference
in the lives of so many in need.
Donating food when it’s needed most
The food drive’s timing is crucial because food banks, shelters, pantries and soup kitchens are
running very low on food donations around this time of the year. They receive donations leading up
to Christmas and by springtime, shelves and food supplies are depleted and remain low throughout
the summer months. This initiative will Help fill that void. Please consider giving.
How the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive works
Place non-perishable food donations in a bag and attach the pink flyer (you will receive in the mail
this week) to the bag. Leave your donation by your mailbox or near where you receive your mail on
Saturday, May 11 by 10:00 am, and Canada Post will do the rest. Please ensure that your bag (with
flyer attached) is visible from the street. It’s that simple! For those wish to give a monetary
donation, make a cheque payable to the agency of your choice and Canada Post will collect it as
well. Make sure your pink flyer is visible so they know you have a donation to pick-up.
