SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Coast Guard, in coordination with the Chippewa County Local
Emergency Planning Committee, will conduct a roadway spill/dye test on October 17, 2019 at approximately
1:30 p.m. into the power canal, in Sault Sainte Marie, MI.
The purpose of the drill is to simulate an overturned fuel tanker truck spill and map sewer exit points in the St.
Marys River. Validating this information will aid first responders to quickly mitigate a potential spill through
an effective and efficient coordinated response. Information gathered during this drill will also be used in the
development of future tanker truck spill exercises. The dye that will be provided by the Chippewa County
Health Department is Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energry approved and
environmentally safe.
Participants in the drill include Coast Guard Sector Sault Sainte Marie, Sault Sainte Marie Police and Fire
Departments, Chippewa County Health Department, and Chippewa County Emergency Management.
Traffic will not be blocked, however, it may be slowed at times; an alternate route may be advantageous for
those transiting through the area. Drivers are requested to be aware of emergency response equipment and
responders in the area during the drill.
