So you own a dog, and love taking them for walks just as much as they love it! But did you know you’re probably walking your dog wrong?

That’s according to Ingrid Newkirk, who is the founder of PETA. Newkirk says too many people just take their dog around the block to give them a “bathroom break,” and that’s not good enough. Newkirk also says “It’s their walk, you know?” and  “That’s a very special occasion for a dog, to be outside and to smell and look.” She adds, “They don’t want to be stuck in a room all day with their legs crossed, hoping to go outside. It’s more than a bathroom break, it’s an excursion.”

So how do you properly walk your dog?

Newkirk advises owners:

To let their dogs “sniff,” because, “That’s their way they read the news, that’s their Internet. Don’t drag them along.”

She also suggests owners get off their phones and pay attention to their dog, and never walk the dog using a collar, rather use a harness.
