Increase in Fraudulent Calls

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has been receiving a significant number of complaints about fraudulent calls.
Members of the
public have been receiving automated calls, usually early in the morning, claiming
to be in the security and fraud department of your bank or credit card company.
The automated call then claims your account has been flagged due to unusual
activity overnight. Once you confirm the purchase didn’t occur they will claim
to credit your account, but only if you share your account information.
If you receive
a call of this nature, DO NOT share any personal information on the phone. Hang
up the phone immediately; do not press a key to speak with a live operator. In order
to protect yourself in the future, consider asking your phone company if you
can block certain numbers from calling you.
If you have concerns about your banking or credit card accounts, please contact your provider using the toll free number on the back of your card. They will be able to confirm if there is any illegal activity on your account.
