As we continue to celebrate the accomplishments of women for International Women’s Week, we shine a spotlight on a local trailblazer.

Donna Hilsinger is not only Sault Ste. Marie’s Ward 3 councilor, but also an entrepreneur, a business woman, an executive director, and has over 40 years of experience in the tourism sector.

Donna has worked at her family owned business, The Water Tower Inn, for many years and is also the executive director of the Algoma Fall Festival.

Donna says her advice to woman, and anyone interested in getting involved in their community or start a business, is to build from what you are interested in and passionate about.

Donna says she was always influenced and inspired by the hard work of Diane Marshall, who has contributed immensely to Sault Ste. Marie through the Christmas Cheer campaign and other initiatives.

She recalls attending the ATHENA Awards, which is presented to an individual who is recognized for their professional excellence, for providing valuable service to their community and for actively assisting women in the attainment of their professional goals and leadership skills, where Diane was being honoured, as her ‘Ah-Ha’ moment.

Despite the great strides and work that International Women’s Week has done to celebrate incredible women, Donna says there is still work that needs to be done.
