CatholicBoardCatholic school board trustees learned more about a successful program at their meeting on Wednesday night.  The Reading Recovery Program is described a ‘short-term’ intervention to help both teachers and students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 to improve their literacy and numeracy skills.  In this initiative, teachers take any shared knowledge and pass it on to their colleagues and students.  Participants are able to improve their reading through various texts, with a focus on fluency and comprehension.  Writing skills are also enhanced through phonic awareness and vocabulary. Teachers participate in 30 to 50 hours of learning during a 12 to 20 week period.  There are as many as 37 students involved in Reading Recovery — that number varies by school.  Reaction to Reading Recovery has been very positive from parents, teachers and principals — with some describing the program as the best thing to happen to their child or student.

Students from four Catholic elementary schools will have a new home with a familiar name.  St. Basil Catholic Elementary School was announced as the new name for the former St. Basil Secondary School.  It will be home to students from St. Theresa, St. Pius X, St. Bernadette and St. Ann schools starting in September 2017.  The decision on the name was made at Wednesday’s Huron-Superior Catholic District School board meeting.
