Growing the middle class across Canada requires a government that stands up and fights for the rights of working people. This Labour Day, I want to acknowledge the importance of the labour movement in Canada and celebrate the hardworking Canadians who have moved the yardsticks forward.

At today’s Sault Ste. Marie District Labour Council Labour Day Event and Mototorcycle Show and Shine, I paused to reflect on what Canadians have accomplished over the last four years. Together we’ve created jobs, grown our economy, and made historic investments across all industry sectors. With over $100 million invested in Algoma Steel and Tenaris to create jobs here in the Sault, I’m proud to be running for re-election to prioritize working people and families.

As your Member of Parliament, I worked to ensure that the priorities of workers in Sault Ste. Marie were heard. As a member of the Pay Equity Committee, we ensured workers have equal pay for work of equal value. I also passed a motion in Parliament – with support from all parties – to define and address precarious work, something we see all too often in today’s workforce. Being a real partner to labour requires a government committed to working Canadians and unions, and I’m proud to stand by this commitment.
