SMELLY STRANGERS DISGUST US MORE THAN THOSE WE CONSIDER TO BE MORE LIKE US: The cliché that says, “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t,” seems to apply to a new study. Researchers from Sussex University in the U.K. had male participants wear T-shirts for seven days in a row, then sealed the shirts in air-tight boxes. Some of the smelly shirts had the university’s logo on it, while others had the logo of the school’s rival– Brighton University. Participants from Sussex University then smelled the shirts and were found to be more disgusted by T-shirts with the rival school’s logo. Researcher Anne Templeton explains, “These findings suggest that disgust isn’t just a matter of sensory information but of our social relationship to the source. This helps explain, for instance, why we experience less disgust when our own children are sick on us or when we change their [diapers].” (Daily Mail) (Image: flickr.com)
