Sault Ste. Marie, ON (2019 10 31) – As residents prepare for winter, the City of Sault Ste. Marie would like to provide the following reminders:

Staff are sweeping and cleaning basins and storm drains in preparation for the flow of water during the winter months. Residents are not to rake leaves onto roadways or into ditches as they cause drains to plug resulting in flooding. Take caution when near drainage systems and ensure children and pets stay away from hazardous areas. The final weeks of leaf and yard waste collection will be November 11 for Route A and November 18 for Route B weather permitting.

To avoid damage and assist in street cleaning, basketball nets must be removed from roadways.

Under By-law 77-200-5(14), motorists are reminded that effective Friday, November 1 parking of vehicles on city streets is not permitted during the winter months between midnight and 6 a.m. Vehicles that remain parked on the street during an overnight parking restriction will receive a $15 fine and may have their vehicle towed at the owner’s expense. The By-law remains in effect from November 1, 2019 through to midnight April 30, 2020 even when there is no snow. Weather predictions change and when snow occurs, officers from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and Parking Enforcement Officers, will tag and tow cars to assist Public Works and Engineering Services with snow removal.

Garbage and recycling roll-out carts should not be put out the night before pick-up. Roll-out carts should only be placed curbside by 7 a.m. the morning of scheduled pick-up to aid in winter operations. Residents are reminded that beginning November 4, garbage and recycling collection will occur on different days. Waste collection dates will not change and recycling collection will move to the next business day. Visit saultstemarie.ca/recycling for more information.
