If the coronavirus pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we all need to wash our hands more!

But should you also be soaping up the rest of your body far less? Sandy Skotnicki, assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Toronto, says yes.

She tells The Atlantic that when you’re in the shower or bath, the only body parts you should be sudsing up are “underarms, groin, feet.”

Too much lathering on other parts “strips away the oils in the outer layers of skin that help preserve moisture,” making you more susceptible to irritants, allergens and even eczema.

As for frequent hand-washing, writer James Hamblin–author of the new book Clean: The New Science of Skin--calls it “possibly the single most valuable thing you can do to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
