Now you most likely won’t look at your nails the same way after reading this, which is a good thing. Fiona Tuck is an Australian nutritionist who has recently shared how fingernails can signal a lack of certain nutrients or severe illnesses. Saying

‘Nail health can tell us whether an individual is lacking certain nutrients, such as iron or zinc, whether something more severe is occurring or if external factors have damaged the nail itself,’

So what are you looking for on your nails and what could those signs mean?

White spots or lines: Could mean, zinc or calcium deficiency

Pitted nails: Could mean, psoriasis, arthritis or eczema

Koilonychia/spoon shaped nails: Could mean, severe iron deficiency or anaemia

Pale or blue nails: Could mean, low blood circulation around the body.

Beau’s lines: Could mean, an infection

Dark areas under nail: Could mean, external factor, sometimes nothing or possible melanoma

Yellow nails: Could mean, fungal infection

Ridges on the nail: Could mean, deficiencies or issues associated with the gut

Clubbed nails: Could mean, severe internal issues relating to lung conditions or disease.

Now at this point you might be freaking out while looking at your nails. But, before you go see a doctor, it’s important to consider any external factors that may have impacted the growth of the nail. Which include

“fake nails, bumping the nail, peeling or ripping the nail or any other elements that may physically harm the nail.”
