SaultMICity Commissioner Bill Lynn talked about new Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill (bla-shill) on Monday night.  He started a conversation on how the city can honour the new bench boss, who grew up and played hockey in Sault, Michigan.  Blashill’s playing career included a national championship in his youth as a goalie.  His previous head coaching stints include Indiana in the USHL, Western Michigan and Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.   A group made up of Sault Mayor Tony Bosbous, Lynn and fellow Commissioner Kathleen Twardy and City Manager Oliver Turner will write up that letter and wait for a response from Blashill.   Examples of what could be done range from a billboard announcing his being the Wings coach to getting a replica of a jersey with Blashill’s number 15 on the back — the year he started coaching the Red Wings.

The Soo Theatre Project and Tapawingo Farms are just a couple of the groups that will benefit from Youth Recreation Program Funding for this year.  A request for 35 thousand dollars from the City Budget to support those organizations was approved at Monday’s City Commission meeting.  Most of the funding will go towards ice credits at Pullar Stadium for the Soo Michigan Hockey Association and the Hiawatha Skating Club, as well as for the Sault Area Little League.  The seven groups provide recreational activity for more than 26 hundred youth in Sault, Michigan and the outlying areas and townships.
