The suggestion of establishing tolls at entry points in the city for large commercial vehicles had the desired effect in leading to a very spirited discussion at Monday night’s city council meeting.
Ward one City Councillor Paul Christian was behind a resolution designed to draw attention to the frustration in our city not being able to secure provincial connecting link program funding for the widening of Black Road between McNabb Street and Second Line.
Fellow Ward One Councillor Steve Butland was described by Christian as a relunctant seconder to the resolution due to the suggestion of tolls—–however Butland did support it wanting to see the issue of the funding brought to the forefront.
Christian also said he wasn’t in favour of the toll idea which was suggested to him by constiuents and agreed to drop that aspect from a resolution that was passed by council which will see city staff come back with an update on the status of the 5.6-million dollar project.

City staff will be bringing back a report to city council regarding a motion brought forward by ward six councillor Ross Romano and ward 3’s Matthew Shoemaker suggesting a new fee structure for the city’s landfill site.
The motion calls for a fee structure which would see non-city residents pay more than city-residents when it comes to using the landfill.
Public Works Commissioner Larry Giardi did explain to council at Monday’s meeting that only residents from the city along with Prince Township and Rankin are allowed to make use of the landfill.
Giardi says if staff suspect a driver to be from outside of those areas, ID will be requested.
