The (US) National Pest Management Association has released their predictions for which types of pests will invade your backyard barbecues this summer. The report breaks the predictions down by U.S. region. On the East Coast, where the spring has been chilly, mosquitoes are expected in high numbers. The pests require water to breed, and as all of winter’s leftover snow melts, it creates plenty of standing water for them to mate in. Those on the West Coast can expect pests to emerge earlier as they had a warm winter and spring. However, the drought there means mosquitoes will be concentrated to a few areas, meaning they’re more likely to transmit the deadly West Nile Virus to humans, who also hang out near water.
