AUFA disappointed with results of conciliation
The Algoma University Faculty Association (AUFA) is disappointed that, after a full day of conciliation, the university administration has not addressed important concerns raised by Algoma’s contract faculty during the bargaining process.
Algoma’s contract faculty are one of the lowest paid in Ontario, and yet the university administration will not agree to provide contract faculty with fair salaries nor transparent hiring processes.
Following today’s conciliation session, AUFA, which represent all 164 contract faculty at Algoma University, have notified the Ontario Ministry of Labour of the failure to reach an agreement.
This notice begins a countdown, putting contract faculty in the position to strike in the first week of March.
“Our members would rather be in the classroom, teaching students”, said Deborah Woodman, AUFA vice-president, “but our members are willing to walk off the job if the university administration isn’t willing to treat them fairly.”
AUFA remains committed to reaching a deal at the table, and is hopeful that the university administration will make an offer that addresses their remaining concerns, such that a strike can be averted.
