Sault Ste. Marie:  The Heaven Cent Campaign at St. Mary’s College (SMC) has found another way to give to the community.

On Tuesday morning, some of the students who organized and developed the 2016 campaign presented officials of the Sault Ste. Marie United Way a cheque for $5,000.  It was the final presentation of funds the campaign distributed to various local organizations.

“Here at St. Mary’s, we are all about giving back to our community, making sure everybody’s needs are met.  United Way is in need of our support and it is a great honour to share what we have with them.  As a Knight, and on behalf of all our Knights, we are pleased to help everyone in our community,” said Grade 11 student, Annina Chorney.

“Thank you very much for helping us and for setting a fabulous example for the community.  Your donation leaves us just under $55,000 shy of our March 31st goal.

This donation will go a long way to changing lives by addressing the root causes that prevent some from achieving their true potential, said Campaign Chair, Kathleen McFadden.

Just prior to Christmas, the Heaven Cent campaign held an initial cheque presentation event.  At that time, over $13,500 of the $19,000 collected in just three weeks through a variety of student activities during Advent was distributed.  Recently, donations were also made to the YMCA, Elks Oncology Van and Push for Change.

“I am very proud of the students here at St. Mary’s College, of how they take it upon themselves to be the change in the world they want to see and how they answer to those calling out in time of need,” said SMC Vice-Principal, Christopher Czop.
